About Playa Costacabana

The Vibe

Costacabana is an urban local beach used by residents as much as visitors. The promenade and nearby streets make arrival easy, while the absence of a dense hotel strip gives the waterfront a more domestic character than a purpose-built resort. Summer brings high occupation, but the beach extends far enough for activity to spread along several sections divided by groynes.

The eastern end feels closer to the open coastal route towards El Alquian and Retamar. Wind and moderate wave action are normal features in municipal descriptions, so the beach should not be presented as permanently calm. The groynes reduce wave impact in some pockets, creating visual and practical differences from one section to the next.

The Setting

About Costacabana

This bathing-water point belongs to Costacabana, not El Perdigal, and lies on the eastern side of Almeria's residential beach frontage. The shore combines dark sand and small stones with a promenade, stone groynes and direct access from the low-rise neighbourhood behind it.

The Local Anchor

The Costacabana neighbourhood is the immediate anchor, with homes, small businesses and the seafront arranged around the beach. The city centre lies west, reached along the coastal corridor past the University of Almeria.

The GR-92 route continues east from the end of the promenade towards the Torre del Perdigal, Retamar and Torregarcia. That walking connection gives the beach a useful position between the urban coast and the more open landscape beyond the city.

The Landscape

Almeria's municipal information describes Costacabana as about 1,200 metres long and 30 metres wide. Its surface is gravel and dark sand, and a complete promenade follows the residential frontage.

Stone groynes project from the shore and break the beach into smaller arcs. Low buildings, palms and paved access points form the landward edge, while the view east becomes progressively less urban. The official bathing-water code identifies this point as Costacabana PM1, confirming that the previous El Perdigal description belonged to the wrong location. This eastern monitoring point is nearer the transition beyond the residential promenade.
