About Playa Retamar

The Vibe

Retamar is a busy summer beach with a straightforward resort rhythm. Families and residents move between the shore, promenade, accommodation and places to eat, while the broad length of the beach allows activity to spread beyond the busiest access points. It feels more organised than Torregarcia but less enclosed than the central beaches of Almeria city.

The setting is open and often breezy. Municipal information describes moderate wave action and windy conditions, so the water does not always have the flat appearance suggested by older promotional text. The beach remains appealing for walking and spending time by the sea even when conditions are less suitable for a quiet swim.

The Setting

About Retamar

Retamar is a long urban beach east of Almeria, backed by the residential area of the same name and a complete seafront promenade. Its mixture of dark sand and small stones, nearby restaurants and views towards Cabo de Gata make it a convenient base at the transition between city coast and protected landscape.

The Local Anchor

The Retamar and El Toyo developments form the main local centre, with shops, hospitality and residential streets close to the waterfront. The promenade creates a clear public edge and links different access points along the long beach.

Eastward, the GR-92 coastal route continues towards the hermitage and watchtower at Torregarcia. This connection places Retamar beside one of Almeria's most important natural and historical coastal sections rather than treating it as an isolated resort.

The Landscape

The city beach information lists Retamar at about 1,250 metres long and 45 metres wide. It has dark sand mixed with small stones, a high level of summer occupation and a continuous promenade behind the shore.

The beach faces south across the Bay of Almeria, with the landforms of Cabo de Gata visible to the east. Low development, planted promenade areas and the dry coastal plain replace the high-rise skyline found nearer the city centre. Seasonal services and accessible facilities are available, but the open exposure means the sea and wind remain the strongest elements of the landscape.
