About Playa Matalascanas

The Vibe

Matalascanas is lively, family-focused and large enough to offer different moods along the shore. The central sections are busy with restaurants, apartments and seasonal services, while the ends of the beach feel increasingly open as development gives way to dunes and protected land.

Atlantic tides and surf shape every day. Low water creates a broad firm surface for walking, while stronger wind and swell produce a more energetic shore break. Summer afternoons are the busiest, but early mornings and evenings offer long walks with fewer people and cooler conditions.

The Setting

About Playa Matalascanas

Playa Matalascanas stretches along the Atlantic edge of Almonte beside the protected landscapes of Donana. Its long golden sand, extensive promenade and immediate access to holiday accommodation make it a fully serviced resort beach beside one of Europe's most important natural areas.

The Local Anchor

The Torre de la Higuera is the beach's unmistakable landmark. The remains of the old coastal watchtower now stand tilted in the water, separated from the shore by erosion and changing tides. Its unusual silhouette has become the best-known image of Matalascanas.

Donana National Park begins around the resort and dominates the wider identity of the area. Dunes, pine woodland, marshes and seasonal wetlands support exceptional birdlife and wildlife, although access to protected zones is controlled. Almonte provides the municipal and cultural centre inland, while El Rocio adds another important local landscape around the marsh.

The Landscape

Fine golden sand runs for several kilometres beneath a broad western horizon. The central promenade is backed by hotels, apartments and restaurants, but the urban strip is narrow compared with the immense natural territory beyond it.

Towards the protected edges, dunes and coastal vegetation replace buildings. The Atlantic remains open and exposed, producing strong sunsets and constantly changing sandbars. Matalascanas is unusual because a mature holiday resort sits directly beside Donana, creating a sharp but visible boundary between serviced beach life and one of Spain's largest wild coastal landscapes. The sheer length of the shore also allows visitors to choose between busy central entrances and quieter outer sections.
