Playa Santa Marta

The atmosphere is relaxed and local. The river mouth softens the setting, and the beach often attracts families, walkers and people looking for a less enclosed alternative to Baiona's compact town sands. It is not remote, but the low peninsula and open view across the bay create breathing space between the shore and the busier centre.

Tides play an important role here. The meeting of river and sea changes the width and appearance of the wet sand, revealing channels and shallow margins that make the landscape interesting even when swimming is not the main plan. Visitors should read the conditions on arrival rather than assume the water will look the same throughout the day.

Santa Marta is a sheltered, fine-sand beach on the eastern side of Baiona, beside the mouth of the River Baina and the small peninsula that shares its name. The beach extends for about 250 metres and has a long association with local shellfishing. It feels more residential and estuarine than the central beaches beside the harbour, while remaining close enough for an easy visit from town.

The Chapel of Santa Marta stands on the nearby peninsula. The small historic building is tied to one of Baiona's best-known episodes: Francis Drake landed in this area in 1585 during an attempt to attack the fortified town. That story gives the headland a significance far beyond its modest size.

The beach's shellfishing tradition is equally important. The sheltered shallows and estuarine ground connect Santa Marta with the working life of the bay, reminding visitors that this coast has supported local communities as well as summer recreation.

Fine sand lies between the peninsula, the Baina river mouth and the inner curve of Baiona Bay. The shoreline is backed by the neighbourhood rather than cliffs or dense forest, but water dominates the view. Across the bay, Monterreal provides a strong distant landmark, while the river introduces reeds, channels and softer estuary colours. Santa Marta is most rewarding as a meeting point of beach, river and history, with a landscape that changes noticeably as the tide advances and retreats.
