Playa d'En Goixa-Els Morts

The beaches feel local and compact, with families, couples and regular swimmers sharing the shoreline. D'en Goixa lies in a residential setting and is one of Colera's more frequently used beaches, while Els Morts continues beside it with a broader mixture of stones and coarse sand.

Beach shoes are useful, and the water can deepen quickly. Tramuntana wind may strengthen with little warning, changing a calm bay into a rougher place for swimming. Visitors should follow flags and avoid rocky edges when waves are breaking.

D'en Goixa and Els Morts form adjoining beaches in the bay of Colera, close to the village and railway station. Coarse sand, pebbles and steep Pyrenean foothills create a rugged northern Costa Brava setting very different from the broad sandy resorts farther south.

Colera is the immediate anchor, a small village gathered around its bay between Llanca and Portbou. The railway station sits close to the beach, making this an unusual Costa Brava location that can be reached conveniently by train.

The name Els Morts is traditionally linked to the period when people from Portbou were brought by sea to the cemetery at Colera. The story adds historical context, but the modern beach is a well-used village shore rather than a sombre or isolated place.

D'en Goixa is approximately 150 metres long, and Els Morts extends for a similar distance beside it. Schist slopes, rocky points and sparse Mediterranean vegetation descend towards the water, reflecting the hard landscape near the French border.

The bay provides some enclosure, but the north-facing terrain remains exposed to strong regional winds. Clear water often reveals stones and rock beneath the surface. Houses and the rail line remain close, while hills rise sharply behind the village.

The combined shoreline is best for visitors who value a small-scale maritime setting, rail access and rugged scenery. Colera offers neither resort polish nor extensive sand; its attraction lies in the close meeting of village, mountains, pebble beach and open northern sea.
