Playa Carchuna

Carchuna is spacious, practical and less concentrated than a compact resort beach. Families and regular visitors gather near the established access points, while walkers can continue along a long shore of dark sand, gravel and small stones. Summer brings activity, but the scale of the frontage leaves room away from the busiest areas.

The waterline is open to wind and short Mediterranean swell. Coarser material can make the entry firmer underfoot than at a fine-sand beach, and the shoreline may change after winter storms. Seasonal services support the main bathing areas without turning the entire coast into one continuous promenade, and the long frontage remains useful for walking outside the busiest weeks.

Playa Carchuna forms a long Mediterranean shoreline east of Motril, backed by the agricultural plain of the Llanos de Carchuna. The shoreline reflects Carchuna's broad open coast, defensive fort and working greenhouse landscape immediately behind the sand.

The Castillo de Carchuna is the clearest local landmark. Built in the eighteenth century as part of the coastal defence network, the rectangular fort watched over a shore exposed to raids and maritime movement. Its solid form remains an important reference on the flat plain behind the beach.

Carchuna is equally shaped by modern agriculture. Greenhouses extend across the fertile coastal ground, producing vegetables distributed far beyond Granada. Restaurants and beach businesses combine this inland produce with fish and seafood from the Motril coast.

Dark sand, gravel and pebbles run beneath a broad horizon with few natural headlands. The flat agricultural plain sits immediately behind the beach, while dry hills rise farther inland and the cliffs towards Calahonda become more prominent to the east.

Westward, the coast leads towards Torrenueva and Motril's port area. Eastward, Carchuna gradually approaches Calahonda, where the terrain becomes steeper and rockier. The beach's identity comes from openness and contrast: Mediterranean water on one side, intensive cultivation on the other, and an eighteenth-century fort standing between them.
