Playa Castell de Ferro

Castell de Ferro has a relaxed working-town atmosphere. Families, residents and summer visitors use the shore, while cafes and restaurants along the seafront keep food and everyday services close. The beach is long enough for quieter sections away from the busiest central entrances.

The surface is darker and coarser than fine resort sand, with gravel and small stones appearing near the waterline. Mediterranean conditions are often manageable, though easterly winds and short waves can change the shore quickly. Evening is especially active as people return to the promenade after the heat eases.

Playa de Castell de Ferro forms the long urban shoreline of the coastal centre of Gualchos municipality. Its dark sand and gravel, town promenade and steep mountain backdrop create a practical local beach beneath the remains of the historic castle.

The Castillo de Castell de Ferro occupies the hill above the town. The surviving structure dates mainly from the medieval period and offers panoramic views over the bay and the narrow coastal plain.

Fishing and greenhouse agriculture both shape the local economy. Restaurants serve grilled fish, squid and rice, while vegetables and subtropical produce come from cultivated land squeezed between the mountains and the sea. Gualchos, the older white village, lies higher inland.

Dark sand and gravel form a long curve beneath the built waterfront. White and pale buildings climb the lower slopes, while the Sierra de Lujar and nearby ridges rise sharply behind the town.

East and west, cliffs and small coves break the coastline, with La Rijana lying farther west towards Calahonda. The beach is urban but visually dramatic because the mountains leave little flat land. Castell de Ferro's landscape combines castle, hillside homes, working coast and dark Mediterranean shore within one narrow coastal corridor. The seafront is long enough for residents to use different sections for walking, bathing and small-boat activity. Municipal life remains close behind the shore, with shops and cafes reached directly from the coastal streets.
