Playa los Escullos

Los Escullos feels open, informal and less polished than an urban resort beach. Visitors spread along the sand and mixed shore, while walkers use the coastal paths towards La Isleta or Cala Higuera. The nearby settlement provides places to eat and stay without forming a dense wall of development behind the beach.

The water can be clear around the rocky margins, attracting snorkellers and divers in suitable conditions. Wind is an important part of this exposed coast, and the sea can become more active than the sheltered appearance of the bay suggests. Mornings are often the quietest time to explore the fossil formations before the strongest heat.

Playa de Los Escullos lies beside the small settlement of Los Escullos in Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, between La Isleta del Moro and San Jose. Its pale shore, fossil dune formations, volcanic hills and Castillo de San Felipe create a varied coastal setting with walking, snorkelling and village services close at hand.

The Castillo de San Felipe stands close to the beach as part of the eighteenth-century defensive network built along the Almeria coast. Its low stone form overlooks the bay and gives Los Escullos a clear historical landmark.

The settlement also connects with the agricultural and fishing traditions of Nijar. Paths inland lead towards El Pozo de los Frailes through old fields, wells, water structures and volcanic terrain, while La Isleta del Moro remains the nearest active fishing village. Local restaurants commonly serve grilled fish, rice and simple seafood dishes.

The shore is framed by pale fossil dunes that have been carved into ledges, channels and rounded platforms. Behind them rise the dark volcanic forms of Los Frailes, among the most prominent peaks in the natural park.

Sparse scrub, agave and esparto cover the dry ground, and the absence of high buildings keeps the geological structure easy to read. The beach itself changes from sand to pebbles and rock, creating different textures along a relatively short distance. Los Escullos is not defined by one dramatic feature but by the combination of castle, fossil dunes, open water and volcanic hills gathered in the same view.
