Playa las Negras

Las Negras is informal, creative and sociable. Visitors share the shore with small boats, local families and people moving between the beach and the village's compact streets. The surface is coarser than at Agua Amarga or Los Genoveses, so many people come as much for the setting, food and atmosphere as for a classic fine-sand beach day.

The village can become lively in summer, but it retains a bohemian quality associated with independent travellers, walkers and residents. Mornings are quieter, while evenings bring people to terraces overlooking the sea. The open position means water conditions can vary, and footwear is useful where stones gather along the waterline.

Playa Las Negras fronts a small coastal village within Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, beneath the dark volcanic mass of Cerro Negro. Its mixed dark sand, gravel and pebbles, working boats and waterfront restaurants give it the character of a lived-in fishing settlement rather than a conventional sandy resort.

Fishing remains the strongest local reference. Small craft are drawn up near the shore, and restaurants serve fish, rice and seafood in a setting where the connection between boat and table remains visible. Las Negras also acts as the usual departure point for reaching Cala de San Pedro by boat or on foot.

The story of the village is linked to families who moved from the more isolated San Pedro area to this more accessible bay. Today that relationship continues through walking routes and boat trips along the otherwise difficult coastline between Las Negras and Agua Amarga.

Cerro Negro rises immediately beside the village, its dark volcanic rock giving Las Negras both its name and its unmistakable backdrop. The beach curves below white houses, with coarse dark material reflecting the geology of the headland.

North and south, the coast is rugged and sparsely developed, broken by cliffs, coves and old paths. Inland hills are dry and lightly vegetated, with esparto, palms and low scrub adapted to the park's semi-arid climate. The contrast between black rock, white buildings and blue water is the defining image, making Las Negras visually dramatic even though the beach itself is modest in size.
