Playa Arnela-fonforrnn

Arnela feels natural, spacious and closely tied to the weather. It is not far from Porto do Son town, yet the beach has a distinctly rural setting with open water in front and parish land behind. Visitors come for sand, walking and the broad Atlantic outlook rather than a promenade or concentrated entertainment. Fine weather can make the bay look welcoming, but the open classification means swell and currents must be respected.

The beach works particularly well as part of a coastal day that includes Barona, viewpoints and short stops along the AC-550. It has enough length for a proper shoreline walk while remaining visually contained by the rocky ends.

Arnela, covered by the Arnela-Fonforron bathing area, lies in the parish of San Pedro de Barona in Porto do Son. Its monitored point is near 42.710 north and -9.013 west, on a fine-sand beach of about 340 metres. This is an open western shore rather than a protected inner-ria cove. The beach belongs to Barona's Atlantic landscape, where granite headlands, changing swell and sparsely developed coastal ground give the area its identity.

Barona is the defining local anchor. The parish is best known for the Castro de Barona, an Iron Age fortified settlement on a rocky peninsula farther along the coast. The site was occupied between the first century BC and first century AD and is one of Galicia's most recognisable coastal castros. Arnela should be understood within that same landscape of granite, open sea and long human use, without suggesting that archaeological remains stand on the beach itself.

Porto do Son town lies north, while Queiruga and the more remote southern beaches extend down the coast.

A broad strip of fine sand sits between rock and low green coastal ground. The bay opens westward, allowing Atlantic swell to remain visible across its full width. At lower tide, wet sand lengthens the beach and mirrors cloud moving over the sea. On clear days, Monte Louro can appear across the wider mouth of the Ria de Muros e Noia, adding a distant landmark to an otherwise open horizon.
