About Playa Tanxil
Tanxil has a relaxed, communal character. Local families, walkers and visitors share a shore that feels integrated with the town rather than set apart from it. The sheltered ria normally creates a softer visual mood than the Atlantic beaches on Barbanza's western side, and the wooded edge adds shade and greenery to the waterfront. Tidal range remains important, however, because the amount and appearance of sand change noticeably through the day.
This is a good choice for travellers who enjoy a beach with cultural life close by. The harbour, streets and cafes are part of the experience, while the beach still offers open views across one of Galicia's largest estuaries.

The Setting
Tanxil is a sheltered beach beside Rianxo town on the northern side of the Ria de Arousa. Galicia's official tourism record places it in the parish of Santa Comba de Rianxo at about 42.6447 north and -8.8131 west and describes coarse sand. The beach forms part of the town's accessible waterfront, with the promenade and nearby public spaces making it easy to combine a swim or shoreline walk with time in Rianxo itself.
Rianxo is known for both maritime work and literature. The town is closely associated with Alfonso Daniel Rodriguez Castelao and other Galician writers, and its cultural identity is visible in museums, public spaces and local events. The harbour and seafront preserve the practical connection with fishing and shellfish cultivation in the Ria de Arousa.
Tanxil also lies on the maritime-fluvial Route of the Sea of Arousa and River Ulla, the traditional approach connected with the Camino de Santiago. This gives the bay a wider historical context without changing its everyday role as Rianxo's local beach.
Coarse sand curves below the promenade and a green park-like margin. The water is framed by distant shores, low headlands and the working geometry of mussel platforms farther out in the ria. Boats cross the view rather than disappearing into an empty horizon. Light is often reflected in broad, calm bands, while low tide reveals more of the gently shelving intertidal shore.
