About Playa 2n Sardinero
The beach is spacious, lively and used throughout the year. Summer brings families, swimmers and beach games, while walkers and runners keep the promenade active in cooler months. Its greater length usually offers more room than Primera del Sardinero, especially away from the main stairs and central facilities.
Despite the urban setting, the water is exposed to Cantabrian swell. Conditions can shift from gentle to energetic, and flags should guide swimming decisions. The beach is equally rewarding without entering the sea: the promenade, gardens and wide horizon make it a natural place for an evening walk.
The Setting
Segunda del Sardinero is the larger northern half of Santander's celebrated Sardinero seafront. A long arc of fine sand, a broad promenade and immediate access to city services make it one of Spain's most distinctive urban beaches, while open-sea waves preserve a genuine coastal character.
Santander is the anchor, and this beach belongs to the city's grand early twentieth-century resort district. Hotels, terraces and residential avenues rise behind the seafront, while the sports complex and El Sardinero stadium sit close to the northern side.
The Piquio gardens separate Segunda from Primera del Sardinero at high tide and provide one of the best viewpoints over both beaches. From this small headland, the curve of the shore and the changing colour of the sea are especially clear.
Segunda forms a broad north-facing bay between Piquio and the rocky ground towards Cabo Menor. The promenade follows the entire beach, but the open horizon and green headlands prevent the setting from feeling enclosed by the city.
At low tide, the sand may connect more fully with the neighbouring beach, while higher water restores the clear division around Piquio. Waves often arrive in long lines, and wind can move quickly across the exposed frontage.
The landscape works through contrast: formal gardens and city architecture behind, open sea and rocky headlands ahead. Walking from one end to the other reveals how Santander has integrated a major natural beach into daily urban life without hiding its weather, tide or maritime scale.
