About El Charcón
El Charcón — A Beach Remade by Lava ## The Vibe El Charcón is a place where the idea of a beach has changed within living memory. Before 2021, this isolated section of the Tazacorte coast was known for stones, rock, and a small, little-visited shoreline. The volcanic eruption transformed it, leaving a denser covering of fresh black sand and a markedly different relationship between land and sea. The atmosphere is still natural and exposed. There is no resort backdrop and no sense that the coast has been softened for visitors. Instead, El Charcón offers the unusual experience of standing beside a shoreline that is geologically new. The sea can produce moderate waves, and the beach should be treated as an Atlantic location rather than a permanently sheltered pool. Its quietness comes with the need for judgement and care. ## The Local Anchor El Charcón belongs to Tazacorte, a municipality defined by sunshine, banana-growing slopes, fishing traditions, and the west-facing ocean. Puerto de Tazacorte provides the main maritime centre, while the smaller coastal districts preserve a more improvised relationship with the shore. The local table connects land and water: fish, octopus, limpets, potatoes, mojo, bananas, and other island produce. These are flavours shaped by the same narrow band between volcanic slopes and sea. ## The Landscape The 2021 eruption altered the coast and created new lava deltas nearby. At El Charcón, the former stony beach was renewed as a darker volcanic strand, framed by raw lava and an evolving shoreline. Its present appearance is therefore not simply ancient scenery. It is the visible outcome of a recent geological event. El Charcón is best understood as a beach of renewal — sparse, black, and still carrying the visual force of an island that continues to build itself.
