Los Guirres — A Coastline Written Twice ## The Vibe Los Guirres should be approached as a remembered beach and a transformed landscape, not as an ordinary current bathing destination. Before the 2021 eruption, this dark, isolated shore was one of La Palma’s recognised surf locations, known for Atlantic swell and a raw atmosphere far removed from the island’s urban beaches. The energy was active rather than restful. Surfers read the sets, waves broke across the volcanic coast, and the beach carried a local identity also associated with the names El Volcán and Playa Nueva. That familiar shoreline was profoundly altered when lava reached the sea. The mood of the place now belongs as much to geology and memory as to recreation. ## The Local Anchor Los Guirres formed part of the coastal world south of Tazacorte, close to La Bombilla and the banana-growing lands of the Aridane valley. Its strongest human connection was the island’s surf community, which valued the beach for exposure, space, and dependable ocean energy. The wider area remains tied to fishing, agriculture, and the small settlements that occupy this narrow western margin. Local food reflects that meeting of land and sea, with fish, potatoes, mojo, fruit, and simple dishes served without unnecessary ceremony. ## The Landscape During the 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption, lava reached Los Guirres and covered or absorbed the former beach into a new volcanic coastline. The position recorded by the bathing-water dataset therefore describes a historic beach location whose physical setting has been rewritten. Fresh lava, new coastal platforms, and altered access now define the area. Any visitor information should be checked against current official restrictions and routes. Los Guirres is a powerful example of La Palma’s living geology — a once-familiar surf beach preserved in records and memory, beside land that did not exist in the same form only a few years ago.
