About San Marcos Beach

San Marcos Beach lies below Icod de los Vinos on Tenerife’s north coast, a sheltered black-sand cove held between cliffs, harbour walls and Atlantic water.

The Vibe

The atmosphere is intimate, local and scenic. San Marcos is very different from the long resort beaches of the south. It is smaller, darker, more enclosed and more closely tied to a northern coastal settlement.

The beach is popular with families and local swimmers because the cove is relatively protected compared with many north-coast shores. Restaurants and accommodation sit above and around the bay, giving it enough services for a comfortable visit without turning it into a huge resort strip.

The mood is relaxed and practical, with a stronger island feel. It suits visitors staying around Icod, Garachico or the north-west who want a recognised bathing beach without travelling to the south coast.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

The local anchor is Icod de los Vinos, the inland town famous for the Drago Milenario and its historic centre. San Marcos functions as the town’s seaside outlet, giving visitors a coast-and-culture combination.

The official 2026 Blue Flag list includes San Marcos under Icod de los Vinos, confirming it as a recognised north-coast beach.

The Landscape

San Marcos is a black-sand beach set in a compact bay below cliffs and buildings. The darker sand gives the cove a volcanic identity, while the harbour structures help reduce exposure compared with open Atlantic beaches.

The north coast can still have changing sea conditions, so live wind and wave information matters. Its beauty is enclosed and local: dark sand, steep greenish slopes, Atlantic swell outside the bay and the sense of a beach tucked below one of Tenerife’s historic towns.
