About Martinhal

The Vibe

Martinhal feels open, active and less enclosed than Mareta or Beliche. Families use the central beach during calmer periods, while windsurfers, paddlers and sailors respond to stronger afternoon conditions. The wide shore provides room even when the main access and resort facilities are busy.

The bay offers some protection from dominant northwesterly weather, although waves, currents and sudden gusts still vary. Offshore rocks and launch areas create local differences in water use. Marked activity zones should remain clear, and each visitor should match the day's wind and sea state to their own ability.

Today's Coastal Conditions

Today's conditions for this stretch of the Algarve coast.

The day will start with a clear sky. Temperatures will rise steadily from 16°C to reach a maximum of 25°C by mid-afternoon. Winds will pick up throughout the day, blowing moderately from the northwest. There will be no rain today. Air quality is good. The sky will remain clear all day.

The ocean is rough, with waves reaching over two meters high. Swimming is advised against due to the dangerous sea state. The water temperature is 20.2°C. Wear a spring suit or rash guard for thermal protection. Be aware of strong currents and rip tides. Stay within designated swimming areas if available.

Winds will be strongest in the afternoon, affecting activities such as cycling and running. Plan these activities for the morning or late evening when winds will be lighter. Surf conditions are suitable for experienced surfers only. Snorkeling and other water-based activities should be avoided due to the rough sea state. Apply robust sun protection throughout the day.

Tomorrow will be similar to today, with a clear sky and temperatures rising to 25°C. Winds will again blow moderately from the northwest. The day after will see a slight increase in temperature, reaching 27°C. Winds will continue to blow from the northwest but may be slightly stronger. Both days will have no rain expected.

The Setting

About Praia do Martinhal

Praia do Martinhal lies east of Sagres on a broad south-facing bay framed by low cliffs, dunes and the offshore Ilheus do Martinhal. Its generous sand, regular wind and proximity to the town make it one of the area's most versatile beaches for families and experienced water-sports users.

The Local Anchor

Sagres lies only a short distance west and provides restaurants, surf businesses, accommodation and everyday services. The fishing harbour and Baleeira area connect the beach with the town's working maritime side.

The Ilheus do Martinhal are the defining offshore landmark. Archaeological remains and former Roman pottery activity around the wider bay add historical interest beyond the modern resort.

The Landscape

Golden sand curves below low ochre cliffs, dune vegetation and scattered development. The bay opens southeast, with the islets breaking the horizon and giving the view a distinctive maritime focus.

Compared with the towering cliffs near Cape Saint Vincent, Martinhal feels broad, bright and exposed to moving air. Morning is often calmer, while afternoon breeze becomes more visible across the water. The beach is defined by space and activity: long sand, offshore rocks and a wind-shaped Sagres setting. The beach also suits visitors who want a longer walk without the steep staircases found at many western Algarve coves. The dune-backed approach and broad bay make Martinhal practical for a half-day family visit as well as a focused afternoon water-sports session.
