The Vibe

Tonel feels powerful, youthful and closely tied to Sagres surf culture. Experienced surfers use the open waves, walkers cross from the town and visitors gather for sunset behind the western horizon. The beach can feel spacious, although activity concentrates near the main access and the most suitable surf peaks.

The shore is directly exposed to Atlantic swell, wind, currents and changing sandbars. Conditions that suit confident surfers may be unsuitable for ordinary swimming, and the surrounding headlands should not create false confidence. Surf zones require clear separation, while the cliff bases need generous clearance because of erosion and falling material.

The day starts at 19°C, feeling like 22°C, with light east winds gusting 6 km/h. Morning waves reach 2.2m from WNW. By late morning, temperatures rise to 22°C, feeling similar. Winds shift northward, gusting 16 km/h, with waves building slightly to 2.3m from WNW. Afternoon temperatures peak at 23°C, feeling like 24°C, with northwest winds increasing to 19 km/h, gusting 32 km/h. Waves hold steady at 2.2m from WNW. Evening temperatures remain at 23°C but feel cooler at 21°C due to stronger northwest winds gusting 41 km/h. Waves decrease slightly to 2.1m from NW. Nighttime sees temperatures dropping to 21°C, with northwest winds gusting 39 km/h and waves at 2.0m from NW.

The ocean presents well-overhead waves at 2.1m, suitable only for experienced surfers. Swimming is not advised due to strong currents and large waves. Water temperature is 20.2°C. Wear a spring suit or rash guard for thermal protection. Visibility underwater may vary with wave conditions. Snorkelers should exercise caution and stay close to shore.

Morning winds are light from the north-northwest at 6 km/h, ideal for cycling and running. Surfing conditions are best before noon, with waves at 2.3m from WNW. As winds increase to 19 km/h in the afternoon, gusting 32 km/h, conditions favour kite sports. Evening winds strengthen further to 25 km/h, gusting 41 km/h, maintaining suitability for kite sports. Apply sunscreen with SPF 50 throughout the day to protect against high UV levels.

Tomorrow will be partly cloudy with temperatures ranging from 19 to 23°C. Winds will increase, reaching up to 29 km/h, gusting 49 km/h. Waves will be up to 2.1m from NW. Sunday will see mostly clear skies with temperatures between 20 and 24°C. Winds will continue to strengthen, up to 31 km/h, gusting 53 km/h. Waves will decrease to up to 1.4m from NW. Both days will have high UV levels.

About Praia do Tonel

Praia do Tonel lies immediately west of Sagres beneath the headland occupied by the Fortaleza de Sagres. Its broad sand, exposed Atlantic swell and dark cliff setting create one of the town's principal surfing and sunset beaches.

The Local Anchor

The Fortaleza de Sagres dominates the eastern skyline and gives the beach an exceptional historical setting. Sagres town lies just inland with restaurants, accommodation, surf businesses and everyday services.

Cape Saint Vincent lies farther west, while Mareta and Martinhal provide different southern and eastern exposures. The short distances between these beaches allow visitors to compare noticeably different conditions without leaving the Sagres area.

The Landscape

Golden sand lies below dark and ochre cliffs, with a broad western horizon open to the Atlantic. The fortress headland creates a monumental edge to the bay, while low scrub covers the exposed plateau above.

Wind, cloud and surf continually change the beach's appearance. Evening light can be exceptional, but temperatures fall quickly once the sun drops. Tonel is defined by exposure and setting: powerful waves, broad sand and the historic Sagres promontory gathered at Portugal's southwestern edge. Tonel is also valuable for visitors who simply want to watch the ocean from the sand or upper approach rather than enter the water. The short walk from central Sagres makes it easy to compare conditions here with the more sheltered-looking Mareta bay on the other side of town.
