About Odeceixe
The Vibe
Odeceixe feels relaxed, independent and strongly connected with walking and surf travel. Visitors use the village for restaurants and accommodation, then drive, cycle or walk west towards Praia de Odeceixe. The centre becomes sociable in summer without developing the scale of a large resort.
The beach lies several kilometres from the main village where the river meets the Atlantic. Ocean waves, river flow, tides and shifting sand all affect conditions, making the two sides of the beach behave differently. Visitors should follow flags, avoid unfamiliar channels and plan transport back to the village.
Today's Beach Report
The day starts at 18°C, feeling like 19°C, with light winds from the east-southeast gusting 8 km/h. It will warm steadily to 23°C by mid-morning, holding there until late afternoon. Winds will pick up from the north-northwest, gusting 39 km/h by early evening. The day will remain mostly cloudy, with no rain expected. Temperatures will drop to 21°C by 8pm, feeling like 20°C.
The ocean has large waves of 2.2 metres at 9 seconds from the west-northwest this morning, increasing slightly to 2.3 metres at 10 seconds by midday. These conditions are suitable only for expert surfers. The water temperature is 20.1°C, so a spring suit or rash vest is advised. Swimming is not recommended due to strong currents and large waves. Snorkelling is also discouraged because of poor visibility underwater from Atlantic swell.
Morning winds are calm from the east at 3 km/h, ideal for cycling and running. Surfing conditions are dangerous for all but experts. As the day progresses, winds will increase, peaking from the northwest at 18 km/h gusting 34 km/h around 2pm. This makes afternoon cycling challenging. Kite sports are unsuitable today due to inconsistent wind direction and speed. Snorkelling conditions will worsen as winds pick up. Apply sunscreen with SPF 50 throughout the day.
Tomorrow will be overcast with temperatures ranging from 17°C to 25°C. Winds will be up to 23 km/h gusting 44 km/h from the northwest. There will be no rain, and UV levels will be high. Waves will be up to 2.0 metres from the northwest. Sunday will see partly cloudy skies with temperatures between 19°C and 26°C. Winds will reach up to 22 km/h gusting 42 km/h, also from the northwest. Again, no rain is expected, and UV levels will be high. Waves will decrease to up to 1.3 metres from the northwest.

The Setting
About Odeceixe
Odeceixe is a whitewashed village in northern Aljezur beside the Ribeira de Seixe, close to the boundary between the Algarve and Alentejo. Its hilltop streets, restored windmill and river route to a spectacular Atlantic beach create a destination divided between inland village life and open coast.
The Local Anchor
The compact centre and windmill provide the clearest landmarks. White houses climb the hillside above the river valley, while small shops and restaurants support walkers using the Rota Vicentina.
Praia de Odeceixe forms the coastal focus, with a settlement and viewpoint above the river mouth. Aljezur lies south, while the Alentejo coast begins north beyond the Seixe.
The Landscape
The inland village overlooks a green valley of fields and river vegetation. At the coast, high dark cliffs enclose a broad sandbank where freshwater and Atlantic water meet.
Tides continually alter the river mouth, revealing channels and different areas of sand. Odeceixe is defined by separation and connection: hill village, fertile valley, walking route and dramatic border beach linked by the Ribeira de Seixe. The distance between village and beach is important when choosing accommodation, particularly for visitors without a car. Evening is rewarding in the hilltop centre, when the valley cools and the windmill, church streets and white houses take on softer light. Local restaurants, bakeries and small shops make the village a practical overnight base for Rota Vicentina walkers and travellers exploring the northern coast.
