The Vibe

Amoreira-Mar feels wild, spacious and attractive to surfers, walkers and families who understand the changing river-mouth setting. Activity gathers near the main access, while the long shore and dune edges provide quieter space. The ocean section feels more exposed than the shallow-looking water farther inside the estuary.

Atlantic swell, currents and shifting sandbars interact with river flow and tide. Channels, pools and safe-looking crossings can change rapidly, so the sea and river sections should not be treated as one uniform bathing area. The recognised ocean zone provides the clearest guidance, while cliffs and unstable dune edges require care.

It will be overcast all day, with temperatures rising to 23°C by afternoon. Morning starts at 16°C feeling like 17°C, with winds at 10 km/h from the north-northeast gusting 18. By late morning, it warms to 19°C, with winds picking up to 14 km/h gusting 26. Afternoon peaks at 21°C but feels like 20°C due to winds increasing to 19 km/h gusting 34. Evening cools slightly to 20°C feeling like 19°C, with winds at 18 km/h gusting 34. Night falls to 18°C feeling like 19°C, with winds dropping to 10 km/h gusting 25.

The ocean has waves at 1.1m from the northwest, suitable for experienced surfers. Swim conditions are rough, with waves reaching waist to chest height. Water temperature is 18.7°C, making a spring suit comfortable. Strong currents and undertows are present. Snorkelers should stay close to shore. Divers should expect limited visibility due to wave action.

Wind speeds increase throughout the day, peaking in the afternoon. Morning offers calmest conditions for cycling and running, with winds at 10 km/h. Surfing and snorkeling are best before noon, with waves at 1.1m and winds under 15 km/h. Afternoon sees strongest winds, ideal for kite sports. UV levels reach moderate, so apply SPF 30 sunscreen. About Amoreira-Mar

Amoreira-Mar is the ocean-facing section of Praia da Amoreira where the Ribeira de Aljezur reaches the Atlantic. Its broad sand, dark rock formations and meeting of river, dunes and open sea create one of the Costa Vicentina's most varied beach landscapes.

The Local Anchor

Aljezur is the nearest town and provides shops, accommodation and a historic centre beneath its hilltop castle. The Ribeira de Aljezur links the inland valley with the coast and gives the beach its distinctive divided character.

Monte Clerigo lies south beyond the headland, while Carriagem and Vale dos Homens continue north. The Rota Vicentina crosses the wider protected landscape.

The Landscape

Pale sand spreads around a winding river mouth beneath dark cliffs and green slopes. A distinctive black rock formation stands near the northern side, while dunes and channels reshape the lower beach through the seasons.

The western horizon remains completely open to the Atlantic. Evening light across river, sand and cliff is especially strong. Amoreira-Mar is defined by meeting waters: ocean surf, tidal river, dunes and dark geology combined within one of Aljezur's most dynamic natural beaches. The beach is especially rewarding when explored slowly and with close attention to tide, because the river channel, sandbanks and ocean edge change throughout the day. Early morning brings quieter access, while sunset spreads strong light across both water systems. Natural shade is scarce across the open sand.
