About Arrifana

The Vibe

Arrifana feels active, scenic and strongly associated with surfing. Surf schools and experienced water users visit throughout the year, while families use the beach during calmer periods. The limited road and parking space above the bay can create pressure long before the sand itself becomes full.

The beach faces Atlantic swell and can carry powerful waves, currents and changing sandbars. Conditions that suit experienced surfers may not suit ordinary swimmers. Visitors should follow flags, use the supervised area and allow extra time for the steep walk between the village and shore.

The Setting

About Arrifana

Arrifana lies on the western Algarve below dark cliffs near Aljezur, where a compact village and fishing harbour overlook a curved Atlantic beach. Its dramatic bay, consistent surf and steep access make it one of the Costa Vicentina's most recognisable coastal destinations.

The Local Anchor

The village above the beach provides restaurants, accommodation and viewpoints across the bay. A small fishing harbour sits at the northern side, preserving a working maritime element within the surf destination.

Ruins of the old Arrifana fortress occupy the headland and offer wide views along the Costa Vicentina. Aljezur lies inland and provides the nearest broader range of shops and services.

The Landscape

Dark cliffs curve around a long strip of pale sand, enclosing the bay while leaving it open to western swell. The Pedra da Agulha sea stack stands offshore and provides a distinctive landmark.

White houses cling to the upper slopes, while the beach remains visually dominated by rock and water. Sunset light reaches directly into the bay. Arrifana is defined by drama and exposure: steep cliff access, fishing history and powerful Atlantic surf gathered within one compact natural amphitheatre. The narrow approach road and steep village streets make parking management important in high season. Visitors staying above the bay benefit from travelling light and allowing extra time for the return climb after the beach. The sheltered shape of the bay does not remove Atlantic power, so calm-looking water should never replace the information provided by flags and lifeguards.
