About Playa de Gros/La Zurriola

The Vibe

Surf is central to daily life here. Schools, experienced riders and beginners share different parts of the break, while volleyball courts, runners and groups on the sand keep the beach active even when swimming conditions are poor. The mood is youthful, social and outward-facing.

Zurriola is relatively open and often carries strong surf. Swimmers should use the marked zones, follow flags and remain aware of boards and currents. When the sea is rough, the promenade and Sagues end of the beach offer excellent viewpoints without needing to enter the water.

The Setting

About

Zurriola is Donostia's open surf beach, stretching for about 800 metres along the Gros district east of the River Urumea. It is the city's most energetic shoreline, where strong waves, beach sports and a modern urban backdrop create a very different atmosphere from the sheltered bay of La Concha.

The Local Anchor

Gros is the immediate neighbourhood anchor, known for cafes, pintxo bars and a lively local character. The Kursaal conference centre stands beside the river mouth, its glass forms marking the western entrance to the beach and connecting the waterfront with the city centre.

At the eastern end, Sagues leads towards the slopes of Mount Ulia. Walking west across the Urumea quickly reaches the old town, but Zurriola retains its own identity rather than feeling like an extension of La Concha.

The Landscape

The beach faces the Bay of Biscay with fewer natural barriers than Donostia's western beaches. The Urumea mouth defines one end, while the dark green mass of Ulia closes the other. Between them, a broad band of sand lies below the promenade and Gros apartment blocks.

Wave energy and tide alter the beach noticeably. Lower water creates more room for sports and walking; higher water narrows the active zone and brings breaking surf closer to the sea wall. Zurriola's landscape is deliberately urban, but never tame. Its appeal comes from the direct meeting of city streets, open water and a beach culture built around movement.
