Playa de Ondarreta

The beach feels comfortable and unhurried. Families use the wide sand for games, regular swimmers follow familiar routes and paddlers take advantage of calmer periods inside the bay. The promenade remains busy with walkers, but the setting generally feels less formal than the city's central waterfront.

Ondarreta is protected from much open-ocean swell, though wind, tide and currents still shape conditions. The beach can narrow substantially at high water, and visitors should follow local guidance when swimming or approaching the rocky western end.

Ondarreta occupies the western end of La Concha Bay, beneath Mount Igeldo and beside Donostia's Antiguo neighbourhood. Around 600 metres long and notably broad at lower tide, it has a more residential, family-oriented character than central La Concha while sharing the same sheltered bay scenery.

The Antiguo neighbourhood rises behind the beach with cafes, shops and a strong everyday city identity. At the western end, the promenade continues to Eduardo Chillida's Peine del Viento sculptures, where steel, rock, waves and engineered blowholes create one of Donostia's most memorable public spaces.

Mount Igeldo stands above this side of the bay, while Santa Clara Island sits directly ahead. The funicular and viewpoints on Igeldo provide a higher perspective over Ondarreta, La Concha and the city beyond.

Ondarreta lies between Pico del Loro and the rocky base of Igeldo. Its sand faces east and southeast into the bay, with Santa Clara shaping the central view and Urgull visible farther across the water. The enclosing hills make the shoreline feel contained without cutting it off from the sea.

Low tide opens a broad recreation area and reveals more of the rocky margins. Higher water brings the sea close to the promenade and can reduce the distinction between different parts of the beach. The western rocks deserve caution when waves are active.

The beach's defining quality is balance: urban access, generous sand, family use and one of the city's strongest natural frames. It feels connected to Donostia but less performative than the famous central curve next door.
