About Playa de Zarautz
Surf provides the constant rhythm. Schools, local riders and visiting surfers use different breaks across the bay, while families and walkers occupy the broad sand between sessions. The beach feels lively in summer but rarely cramped because its length spreads activity over a large area.
Conditions are open and energetic. Rip currents, changing banks and board traffic mean swimmers should respect flags and designated zones. On rough days, the long promenade and dune-side walk still make Zarautz rewarding without entering the water.
The Setting
Zarautz beach stretches for more than two kilometres along one of the longest sandy fronts in the Basque Country. The town, promenade, surf zone and protected dunes of Inurritza all meet along the same shore, creating a beach with several distinct characters rather than one uniform resort strip.
Zarautz is a substantial coastal town rather than a seasonal enclave. Its streets provide restaurants, cafes and everyday services, while a strong surf culture is visible in schools, shops and events. The old centre and seafront are easy to explore on foot.
Green hills rise behind the town and support txakoli vineyards, connecting the beach with the agricultural landscape of the Urola coast. Getaria is visible to the west and can be reached by the dramatic coastal route around the headland.
The beach forms a long, gently curving line between the Getaria side and the protected eastern end at Inurritza. Behind the central sections, the promenade and town create an urban edge; farther east, dunes, marsh vegetation and the estuary environment become more important.
Inurritza is the best-preserved dune field on the Basque coast, and boardwalks help protect sensitive vegetation. Visitors should remain on marked routes and avoid using the dunes as an extension of the beach.
Tide changes the width of the firm walking surface, while wind can carry sand across the upper shore. Zarautz is most impressive from a distance along the promenade, where its scale becomes clear: surf lines, town frontage, dunes and green headlands all belong to one continuous landscape.
