Playa de Itzurun

The beach feels dramatic and enclosed. Surfers and bodyboarders use the active water, while many visitors come simply to walk beneath the cliffs and study the exposed strata. The atmosphere is more contemplative than resort-like because the rock walls dominate every view.

Tide planning is essential. Lower water reveals more of the abrasion platform and flysch, but rising water can close routes around the base of the cliffs. Visitors should not continue along exposed rock without knowing the tide and should keep clear of unstable cliff sections and active waves.

Itzurun is a compact beach beneath the towering flysch cliffs of Zumaia, within the Basque Coast UNESCO Global Geopark. Sand, vertically tilted rock layers and the chapel of San Telmo above the headland create a setting where geology is as important as swimming or surf.

Zumaia is the local anchor, a coastal town at the meeting of the Urola and Narrondo rivers. Its old streets, harbour and interpretation facilities provide context for the geology, while boat trips and marked georoutes explain the wider Deba-Zumaia coast.

The chapel of San Telmo stands above Itzurun and has long associations with sailors. The short climb to the headland rewards visitors with a broad view over the beach and the layered cliffs extending west.

The flysch consists of alternating hard and softer rock layers tilted almost vertically and cut open by marine erosion. These strata continue across the foreshore at low tide, producing long ridges, channels and pools that turn the beach into a visible geological cross-section.

The cliffs record major changes in Earth's history and have international scientific importance. For a visitor, however, their immediate effect is visual: repeated lines rising from the sand, caves at the base and a dark platform reaching into the sea.

Itzurun changes quickly with weather and water level. Sunlight highlights the layers, rain deepens their colour and high tide reduces the accessible shore. The best visit combines beach time with a viewpoint or guided geological route rather than treating the cliffs as scenery alone.
