Playa de Tamariua

Tamariua attracts swimmers, snorkellers, walkers and visitors looking for a quieter alternative to the town beaches. There is no promenade, and the surrounding slopes keep attention firmly on the water and rock. Summer can still bring a steady flow of cars and beachgoers, but the cove retains a rugged, low-service atmosphere.

Footwear is useful on the uneven shore, and the limited flat space means visitors should arrive prepared rather than expecting extensive facilities. The sea can be beautifully clear in calm weather, but tramuntana and swell enter the cove quickly. Conditions around the rocky sides require particular care.

Cala Tamariua lies north of El Port de la Selva at the end of a steep valley facing the wild side of Cap de Creus. A mixed shore of pebbles and coarse material sits between dark rocky slopes, creating a natural cove that feels removed from the village despite being only a short distance away.

El Port de la Selva provides the nearest services and cultural context. Its harbour, fishing traditions and white waterfront sit below the Serra de Rodes, while the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes dominates the mountains above.

Tamariua also has a direct connection with the area's quarrying history. Stone was extracted from the surrounding gneiss, including material used for paving, and the old cuts in the landscape remain part of the cove's visual story.

The beach occupies the mouth of the Tamariua valley, with steep schist and gneiss slopes enclosing the shore. Pegmatite veins and contrasting mineral colours appear within the darker rock, while low Mediterranean vegetation survives in the exposed, salty conditions.

The cove faces north and northeast, making wind direction especially important. On calm mornings the water can appear glassy; during tramuntana it becomes a far more energetic place. Shade reaches parts of the shore as the sun moves behind the slopes.

The approach gives the first full view from above before descending towards the beach. That elevated perspective explains Tamariua's attraction: a narrow valley, a small stony shore and open Mediterranean water meeting within the hard geology of Cap de Creus.
