About Playa de Riells

The Vibe

The atmosphere is lively without feeling dominated by nightlife. Families, children, swimmers and promenade walkers share the area, with the central section busiest during the main summer weeks. The shelving shore often creates a zone of shallower water, although wind and local weather can still change bathing conditions.

Riells works well for visitors who value convenience. Services are close, and the promenade gives non-swimmers an attractive way to enjoy the waterfront. During the supervised season, accessible bathing assistance has also been offered for people who need help entering the sea; operating dates and availability should be checked locally.

The Setting

About

Riells is L'Escala's broad, family-oriented urban beach, curving around a shallow bay south of the old town. Fine sand, a long promenade and easy access to cafes and holiday accommodation make it one of the municipality's most practical beaches for a full day beside the water.

The Local Anchor

L'Escala provides the local anchor, a town known for anchovy curing, fishing traditions and a coastline that joins modern holiday areas with the centre. The old quarter lies north of Riells, while the marina and Port de la Clota are reached by continuing south along the seafront.

The promenade includes references to The Little Prince and its author Antoine de Saint-Exupery, giving an unusual literary thread to an otherwise straightforward resort beach. Restaurants around the bay also make the local anchovy one of the easiest regional specialities to try.

The Landscape

Riells forms a generous sandy crescent with a wide Mediterranean horizon. Buildings and the promenade define the back of the beach, but the bay remains open enough for sea and sky to dominate from the waterline.

The shore changes subtly with weather rather than large Atlantic tides. Periods of wind can bring short waves and rearrange the upper sand, while calmer mornings often show the bay at its most settled.

Looking north connects the beach visually with L'Escala's older waterfront. To the south, the coast leads towards the marina and rockier headlands. Riells is therefore best understood as the accessible, sociable centre of a much more varied shoreline, offering easy bathing and town life within reach of archaeological sites, fishing heritage and quieter coves.
