Playa de l'Estartit

There is room for swimming, sunbathing, beach games and organised water sports, while the broad shoreline makes the sea approachable for visitors who prefer an open, gently shelving beach.

The most convenient sections sit directly in front of the town and carry the greatest concentration of services. They are also the busiest, particularly near access walkways and lifeguard points. Walking farther along the sand changes the mood gradually, with the urban edge giving way to quieter sectors towards Griells and La Pletera.

Platja Gran de l'Estartit is the main town beach of L'Estartit, a wide expanse of fine sand with shallow water and a strong family focus. Its scale prevents it from feeling like a small enclosed resort beach, even when summer activity is high.

L'Estartit's promenade, harbour and town centre run close behind the northern part of the beach. Cafes, shops and accommodation are therefore within easy reach, and the port adds excursion boats, diving vessels, sailing craft and a remaining thread of local fishing life. This is a practical base for visitors who want a beach day without giving up the convenience of a working coastal town.

The defining offshore landmark is the Medes Islands. The small archipelago lies just beyond the bay and forms part of the Montgri, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park. Its protected marine environment has made L'Estartit one of the best-known diving centres on the Costa Brava.

The beach forms part of a sandy shoreline stretching for several kilometres between the harbour area and the mouth of the River Ter. Looking inland, the Montgri massif rises behind the low coastal plain; looking seaward, the Medes Islands break the horizon and give the otherwise open bay a distinctive focal point.

Farther south, dunes, wetlands and restored natural areas become more prominent around La Pletera. This progression from town beach to protected coastal landscape is unusual and valuable. Platja Gran offers the easiest access and fullest facilities, but it also introduces visitors to a much larger system of sand, shallow sea, islands, river and wetland.
