Playa de sa Tuna

The mood is intimate and unhurried, especially before day visitors arrive. Small boats rest offshore, swimmers enter from the narrow beach and waterfront terraces occupy the limited flat space behind. Because the cove is so compact, it can feel busy quickly in high summer.

Sa Tuna is best approached with modest expectations about space. It suits swimming, snorkelling in calm conditions and a meal overlooking the water more than beach games or long walks on sand. Access roads are steep and parking is limited, which helps preserve the sense of separation from Begur town.

Sa Tuna is a tiny former fishing cove east of Begur, where whitewashed houses, rocky slopes and a narrow pebble-and-sand shore gather around clear water. Its secluded position and compact village setting make it one of the Costa Brava's most distinctive small bays.

The old fishermen's houses are the defining anchor. Their simple facades and close relationship with the water preserve the cove's maritime identity, even though many now serve visitors rather than a working fishing fleet.

The coastal path links Sa Tuna with Aiguafreda and the tiny cove of S'Eixugador. Begur's hilltop centre lies inland, reached by a winding road through pine-covered slopes.

Sa Tuna faces northeast inside a rocky inlet. The shore is small and mixed in texture, while dark stone, pale houses and pine vegetation enclose the water on three sides.

The bay often appears sheltered, but strong northeast weather can still affect it. Rocks and boat movements require awareness, and snorkellers should stay close to shore and remain visible.

The landscape is vertical rather than spacious. Houses rise immediately behind the beach, steps climb the slopes and the coastal path threads around the rock. From the opposite side of the cove, Sa Tuna looks almost like a natural harbour carved into the cliffs. Its appeal lies in this compression of village, sea and rugged coastline into a remarkably small, scenic, intimate and memorable space.
