About Playa de Tamariu

The Vibe

The beach is sociable without feeling like a large resort. Families, swimmers, snorkellers and visitors from nearby holiday homes share the shore, while restaurants and cafes line the compact promenade. Summer days become busy because the bay is small, but the absence of high-rise development helps preserve a relaxed scale.

Tamariu suits swimming when conditions are calm and exploring the rocky edges with a mask. The seabed becomes deeper away from the shore, and boat traffic increases during the holiday season, so swimmers should remain aware of marked channels and local guidance.

The Setting

About

Tamariu is a small seaside village in the municipality of Palafrugell, built around a sheltered horseshoe bay. Coarse pale sand, clear water and whitewashed buildings create one of the Costa Brava's most recognisable village-beach settings.

The Local Anchor

The village itself is the local anchor. Tamariu developed around fishing and still keeps small boats near the beach, even though tourism now shapes much of the summer economy. The name is linked to the tamarisk trees once common along this coast.

Palafrugell town lies inland, while the other coastal villages of Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugell can be reached by road and sections of the cami de ronda. This makes Tamariu part of a wider group of distinct bays rather than an isolated resort.

The Landscape

Wooded headlands enclose the bay and protect it from some wind directions, although easterly weather can still send waves into the beach. Rock shelves and small inlets continue beyond both ends, creating good viewpoints along the coastal paths.

The settled backdrop rises quickly behind the promenade, with houses scattered among pine trees. There is little flat land, so roads and paths climb steeply away from the water. The beach receives strong morning and midday light, while the enclosing slopes add shade later in parts of the bay.

Tamariu's appeal lies in the close relationship between village and sea. Boats, restaurant terraces and homes sit within a few steps of the sand, yet the surrounding rock and woodland keep the bay visually connected to the natural Costa Brava.
