Playa d'Illa Roja

The beach is quiet, scenic and traditionally clothing-optional. Visitors come for the natural setting, clear water and sense of separation from nearby developed shores. There are no large facilities, and access is on foot along the coastal path, which helps maintain a calmer atmosphere.

Illa Roja is longer than many Begur coves but still has limited usable space during busy periods. The coarse garnet-coloured sand and open northeast exposure mean waves can be stronger than they appear from the path. Swimmers should judge conditions carefully and avoid the base of the rock when the sea is rough.

Illa Roja is a striking natural beach on Begur's northern coast, between Sa Riera and Platja del Raco. Its name comes from the large reddish rock that dominates the shoreline, creating one of the most recognisable beach landscapes on the Costa Brava.

The coastal path is the main local anchor. It links Sa Riera with Illa Roja and Platja del Raco, providing elevated views of the red islet, pine-covered cliffs and the long coast towards Pals.

Begur town lies inland below its medieval castle. The contrast between the hilltop streets and this remote-looking cove is part of the municipality's appeal, although the steep terrain means they feel far apart.

Illa Roja is about 180 metres long, with reddish-golden sand and a natural cliff backdrop. The central rock sits close to shore and appears almost attached at lower water, dividing the view and casting a strong shadow as the sun moves.

The beach faces northeast and is open to Tramuntana and Mediterranean swell. At calm times, the water can be exceptionally clear; in rougher weather, waves break against the rock and narrow the safe swimming area.

There are no roads or buildings immediately behind the sand. Pine, rock and the coastal path define the landward side. Seen from above, the red stone, blue water and curved beach form a simple, dramatic composition that explains why Illa Roja has become an icon of the Begur coastline.
