Playa de sa Riera

The cove is lively in summer but still feels rooted in local life. Families, swimmers and paddle craft share the water, while restaurants and terraces behind the sand create a sociable waterfront. The beach is large enough to offer different moods, with busier central areas and quieter edges.

Sa Riera often feels more accessible than Begur's tiny coves, but it still faces northeast and can receive waves when the wind turns. Bathers should follow flags and keep clear of marked boat channels. Early morning and evening reveal a calmer side, when the old houses and anchored craft become the focus.

Sa Riera is Begur's largest cove, a broad crescent of reddish-golden sand backed by former fishermen's houses and low coastal development. Its size, services and relatively easy access make it the municipality's most practical family beach while retaining a recognisable Costa Brava setting.

The line of fishermen's houses is the defining local anchor. They recall the cove's working past and give the waterfront a village character despite its popularity. The stream that divides the beach gave Sa Riera its name.

Begur town rises inland beneath the castle ruins, while the coastal path connects Sa Riera northwards with Illa Roja and Platja del Raco. Two smaller neighbouring coves, Port des Pi and Cala del Rei, add variety around the edges.

Sa Riera is about 230 metres long and noticeably wider than most Begur coves. Pine-covered slopes and rocky points frame the bay, while the reddish tone of the sand contrasts with clear blue-green water in calm weather.

The cove is sheltered by shape but not closed from the sea. Swell can enter directly, and the beach profile may change after storms. Rocks at the sides create places for snorkelling when conditions are safe.

From the coastal path, the full curve, houses and offshore water are visible together. Sa Riera succeeds because it combines the comfort of a serviced beach with the cliffs, pines and compact maritime architecture expected from the Costa Brava.
