Playa la Platja

This is a compact, atmospheric shore rather than a large beach for spreading out. Visitors come for a swim, a short sunbathing stop or the pleasure of sitting beside the centre with cafes and restaurants only steps away. In summer it can feel busy quickly because the available sand is limited.

Boats and moorings remain part of the scene, reinforcing the beach's working origins. Swimmers should remain aware of marked boat areas and local activity rather than treating the whole bay as uninterrupted bathing space. The central position makes La Platja particularly appealing early in the morning or towards evening, when the old streets and waterfront are quieter.

La Platja, also known locally as Platja de les Barques, is the town-centre beach of L'Escala. It sits directly below the old quarter, where fishing boats were traditionally drawn onto the sand and the waterfront served as the practical heart of the village.

L'Escala's fishing and anchovy tradition is the defining local anchor. The town became known for salt-curing anchovies, and that heritage survives in local producers, menus and the Anchovy and Salt Museum.

The old quarter rises immediately behind the beach, with narrow streets, small squares and the parish church within an easy walk. La Punta, the rocky end of the historic waterfront, provides a natural viewpoint over the Gulf of Roses and the sequence of town beaches.

La Platja forms a short curve beneath stone-fronted buildings and the seafront promenade. Its backdrop is entirely urban, yet the open gulf gives the beach a much wider visual scale than its physical size suggests.

The sand and waterline can change after easterly weather, and the small shore may feel very different depending on sea state and the number of boats present. The bay is generally more contained than the exposed Empuries beaches, but wind can still produce unsettled water.

From the sand, the most memorable view is the old town meeting the sea without a broad modern resort strip between them. La Platja is valuable precisely because it preserves that direct relationship: fishing heritage behind, small craft close by and the Gulf of Roses opening beyond the historic waterfront.
