About Playa del Hipodromo

The Vibe

Hipodromo feels spacious, lively and strongly residential. Families use the broad upper shore, runners and cyclists follow the promenade and swimmers spread across several recognised entrances. The beach absorbs summer activity better than the smaller central sections because of its length and width.

The Alboran Sea is open to easterly wind, which can create short waves and change the waterline quickly. Seasonal rescue services, accessible routes and nearby businesses support a full day. Natural shade is limited on the sand, making early and late hours particularly useful for exercise.

The Setting

About Playa del Hipodromo

Playa del Hipodromo forms a long urban beach on Melilla's southern waterfront beside the district that gives it its name. Its fine golden sand, broad promenade and generous width make it one of the city's principal beaches for families, walking and everyday recreation.

The Local Anchor

The Hipodromo neighbourhood provides the immediate reference through its homes, sports areas and seafront access. Melilla's central districts and port lie northward, while the outer southern waterfront continues towards La Hipica.

The city's multicultural identity is visible in nearby food, architecture and daily life. Restaurants serve fried fish, grilled seafood, tapas and dishes using North African spices, giving the beach area a strong local character beyond the sand.

The Landscape

Fine golden sand extends beneath a long line of palms, promenade paving, apartments and roads. The beach is broad and relatively straight, allowing long views along the urban coast.

Breakwaters and coastal structures influence parts of the water, while the open Alboran horizon remains dominant. The surrounding city is dense but low enough for the beach to retain a sense of space. Hipodromo is defined by scale and continuity: long sand, residential promenade and active city life arranged along Melilla's southern edge. The long promenade also makes Hipodromo useful for steady running, cycling and evening walking. Different entrances create slightly different levels of service and activity, allowing visitors to choose between busier family sections and quieter stretches. The broad shore remains useful outside the main season.
