About Playa Horcas Coloradas

The Vibe

Horcas Coloradas feels spacious, rugged and strongly shaped by wind and landscape. Local families, anglers and walkers use the recognised access points, while the limited commercial development keeps the atmosphere informal. It suits visitors seeking open coast rather than a tightly serviced resort environment.

The shore is exposed to easterly weather and can receive active waves. Sand mixes with gravel and stones, so footwear is useful near the waterline. Seasonal facilities support the principal bathing area, but shade and nearby services are more limited than at Los Carabos or Hipodromo.

The Setting

About Playa Horcas Coloradas

Playa Horcas Coloradas lies north of Melilla's main urban centre beneath the Rostrogordo and Aguadu coastline. Its mixed sand-and-gravel shore, open Mediterranean water and less developed surroundings create a quieter beach than the long southern promenade.

The Local Anchor

The northern districts of Rostrogordo and Aguadu provide the wider geographical setting. Military history, cliffs and elevated roads shape this less urbanised side of Melilla, where views extend across the Alboran Sea.

Melilla la Vieja and the port lie south, while the outer northern coast continues towards the Moroccan boundary. The city centre remains close enough for restaurants and services, yet the beach feels visually separate from the central waterfront.

The Landscape

Golden-brown sand, gravel and rock form a broad open shore beneath dry slopes, roads and scattered development. The coastline is more irregular than Melilla's southern urban beaches, with rocky points and exposed sections.

The Mediterranean horizon is uninterrupted, and clear conditions reveal the wider Rif coastline. Horcas Coloradas is defined by openness and edge: mixed shore, northern cliffs and active sea arranged beyond the city's principal promenade, while remaining firmly connected with Melilla's distinctive border landscape. Road access and parking can become limited around the recognised entrance, so early arrival is sensible during warm weekends. The open coast also makes morning and late afternoon more comfortable than the fully exposed middle of the day. The northern horizon remains especially clear after unsettled weather passes.
