About Playa Area Grande - Grove
There is a fresh, expansive feeling at Area Grande. The beach attracts families, couples and groups who value its generous width, while breezier days bring a sharper sense of the Atlantic. It can be popular in summer, yet the scale of the beach prevents it from feeling as compressed as smaller bathing spots. The atmosphere is informal rather than polished: towels, windbreaks, beach games and long walks fit naturally here. Anyone planning to swim should judge the water on arrival, because conditions can change with wind and swell.

The Setting
Area Grande lies near A Igrexa on the San Vicente side of O Grove, where the peninsula turns toward a more open Atlantic outlook. It is a broad white-sand beach with considerably more space than the tiny coves scattered around Pedras Negras. Wind and moderate waves are part of its character, so it suits visitors who enjoy an energetic coast as much as those looking for a place to sunbathe. Access is straightforward, but the setting remains largely natural, without a dense wall of buildings behind the sand.
Area Grande forms part of a coast that can be explored on foot through the PR-G 115 route. The trail passes nearby Barreirino and Barcela, the old fish-salting remains at Salgadeira de Barcela, and the archaeological landscape of Adro Vello beside O Carreiro. Together these places explain how fishing, preservation and settlement developed along the sheltered coves of O Grove. The route gives Area Grande a useful second life beyond bathing, especially on cooler or cloudier days.
The beach faces a wide sweep of sea, backed by low vegetation, rural ground and scattered trees. White sand contrasts with dark granite at the margins, and the water can appear notably clear when the sea is settled. Its open orientation brings more wind than the inner-ria beaches, while the surrounding countryside keeps the horizon free from heavy urban development. Area Grande feels connected to a continuous chain of coves and rocky points rather than standing alone as a resort beach.
