About Playa o Carreiro - Grove
Days here feel unhurried. Families spread out along the sand, walkers pause beside the water, and the surrounding woodland helps separate the beach from roads and busier holiday areas. O Carreiro is not about beach clubs or a long promenade; its appeal comes from simple bathing, coastal air and the chance to combine time on the sand with an easy walk. In high summer it can become lively, but the long shoreline usually feels more relaxed than a compact urban cove.

The Setting
O Carreiro is a sheltered beach on the San Vicente side of the O Grove peninsula, set within a rural stretch of coast rather than a built-up resort frontage. Its fine sand extends for roughly 325 metres, with trees and low greenery giving the shore a softer, enclosed character. The beach is a practical choice for visitors who want room to settle without losing the feeling of being close to the landscape. Conditions are generally gentler than on the peninsula's most exposed western beaches, although wind and tide should still be checked before swimming.
The defining landmark is Adro Vello, an archaeological site beside the beach. The remains preserve layers of settlement that include a Roman villa, an old salting complex and a burial ground, showing how long this small corner of the peninsula has been tied to the sea. O Carreiro also sits on the PR-G 115 coastal route, which links beaches, granite outcrops and the remains of the Salgadeira de Barcela. This makes the beach particularly rewarding for visitors who enjoy adding local history to a coastal day.
O Carreiro occupies the northern face of the peninsula, where pale sand meets clear water, granite edges and dense green cover. The shore is more protected than the open Atlantic beaches farther west, while the wooded backdrop keeps development visually subdued. Rocky sections at either end add texture and reveal pools and marine life as the tide changes. Looking outward, the coast feels broad and maritime, yet the curve of the beach retains a comfortable sense of shelter.
