Playa de los Locos

Surf defines the atmosphere. Riders watch the sets from above before descending, schools and experienced locals read the conditions carefully, and spectators gather along the cliff-top paths. Even without entering the water, the beach feels active because waves, wind and weather are always present.

Los Locos is not a casual swimming beach when surf is running. Rip currents, breaking waves and submerged rock can make conditions demanding, so flags and local advice should be treated seriously. Visitors who simply want the view will find the cliff-top outlook as rewarding as the sand itself.

Los Locos is Suances' exposed surf beach, set below steep cliffs on the open side of the town's headland. It has a completely different character from La Concha: stronger waves, elevated viewpoints and a compact strip of sand shaped by the full force of the Cantabrian Sea.

Suances provides the contrast. The port, marina and more sheltered town beaches sit on the opposite side of the peninsula, while Los Locos faces directly into the open coast. A short walk therefore reveals two very different maritime settings within the same town.

Punta del Dichoso and the lighthouse area extend the coastal experience beyond the beach. Paths and viewpoints look over the surf, nearby coves and the broken shoreline west of Suances. Back in town, seafood restaurants and informal bars offer an easy return to shelter.

The beach is enclosed laterally by rock but remains exposed to incoming swell. High cliffs rise immediately behind the sand, and access descends from the urban level above. This height difference gives Los Locos its dramatic amphitheatre-like appearance.

Tide can reduce the available sand, while larger waves reach farther up the shore. The rock margins and cliff base should be approached cautiously, especially during rough weather or rising water. From above, the beach is best understood as part of a powerful headland landscape rather than a protected bay. Its attraction lies in that raw relationship between town, cliff and surf.
