About Playa Penoncillo

The Vibe

El Penoncillo feels spacious, relaxed and residential. Families, walkers and visitors from nearby apartments spread along a long beach where activity is concentrated around chiringuitos and recognised access points. The frontage is generous enough for quieter sections between them.

The shore is composed of dark sand, gravel and small stones. Mediterranean wind and waves can make the waterline active, and the seabed may deepen more quickly than on a shallow sandy bay. Services are available but less continuous than at Ferrara.

The Setting

About Playa El Penoncillo

Playa El Penoncillo lies west of Torrox Costa, forming a long shoreline between Nerja's eastern beaches and the Punta de Torrox area. Its dark sand, broad open water and lower-density residential backdrop make it a quieter alternative to the central promenade at Ferrara.

The Local Anchor

The Punta de Torrox lighthouse and Roman archaeological remains lie to the east. The site includes evidence of a villa, baths and fish-processing activity, showing that this coast was an important settled and maritime landscape long before the modern resort developed.

Torrox Pueblo stands inland in the hills, while Nerja lies west beyond Calaceite and Vilches. Chiringuitos along El Penoncillo serve grilled fish, sardine espetos, seafood and rice.

The Landscape

Dark sand forms a long, open curve below apartment buildings, coastal roads and patches of undeveloped ground. There is no continuous formal promenade along the entire beach, allowing the Mediterranean horizon to remain visually dominant.

Eastward, the lighthouse and Torrox Costa skyline become clearer. Westward, the shore approaches Calaceite, Vilches and Nerja's El Playazo. The Axarquia hills rise steeply inland. El Penoncillo is defined by position and scale: a broad connecting beach between two coastal towns, with open sea in front and residential slopes behind. The beach extends for well over a kilometre, allowing visitors to choose between serviced areas and quieter stretches. Road access runs close behind much of the shore, but changes in level and scattered planting soften the traffic view. The long waterline is particularly useful for morning walking and running.
