Pila de la Barrilla

Pila de la Barrilla, widely known as Playa Chica, is the intimate counterpoint to Puerto del Carmen’s larger beaches. Small, sheltered and full of character, it is a favourite for swimming, snorkelling and short, memorable beach stops close to the old harbour side of town.

The Vibe

The feeling is sociable but compact. Families use the calm water, confident swimmers move around the rocky edges, and snorkellers are drawn by the clear shallows and marine life. Because the beach is small, it can feel busy quickly, but that closeness is part of its charm. It is not a wide towel-and-sunbed beach; it is a cove where people come for the water itself.

The Local Anchor

The local anchor is old Puerto del Carmen, formerly La Tiñosa, with its harbour, restaurants and maritime identity. Pila de la Barrilla’s name is tied to local history and the barrilla plant once used in soda production. Today its identity is more recreational, especially around snorkelling and diving, but it still feels connected to the older seafront rather than only the hotel strip.

The Landscape

The beach is a small mixture of sand and rock, framed by volcanic edges that help shelter the bathing area. The view can reach towards Los Ajaches, Lobos and Fuerteventura, giving this little cove more visual depth than its size suggests. It is a Blue Flag cove for snorkelling and slow mornings rather than a broad resort beach. Its best days are calm, clear and unhurried.
