About Porto Santo - Fontinha

Fontinha is Porto Santo’s central beach, a long, golden and sociable stretch beside Vila Baleira where island life meets the calm turquoise water of the south coast.

The Vibe

The mood is welcoming, lively and effortless. Residents and visitors share the sand, people arrive on foot from the town centre, and the beach remains active from morning swims through late-afternoon conversations near Cais Velho.

Fontinha offers the classic Porto Santo experience without isolation. Its width and length provide space, while restaurants, changing facilities, parasols and nearby streets keep everything convenient. It is often the first beach visitors encounter and the one that best reveals how closely Vila Baleira is tied to the sea.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

The beach begins near Cais Velho and extends for roughly 720 metres toward Pedras Pretas. Its central position has made it one of the island’s most frequented sections, used as much by local families as by holidaymakers.

Porto Santo’s fine carbonate-rich sand has long been promoted in local wellness traditions, while the town adds a cultural dimension beyond bathing. Vila Baleira’s small centre, maritime history and association with Christopher Columbus sit within easy reach. Beach restaurants and bars bring the local routine back to simple pleasures: grilled fish, limpets, bolo do caco and conversation overlooking the water.

The Landscape

A broad expanse of pale golden sand slopes gently toward clear blue-green sea. The shoreline forms part of Porto Santo’s famous nine-kilometre beach, but Fontinha has a defined identity through its relationship with the old pier and town.

The land behind the beach is lower and drier than Madeira, creating a wider sense of sky and horizon. Parking, toilets, changing rooms, lockers, first aid and sunshade services are available, yet the dominant impression remains natural: fine sand, warm-toned light and calm water extending along the island’s south coast. Fontinha feels open and easy, the social heart of Porto Santo’s beach culture.
