About Porto Santo - Pedras Pretas

Pedras Pretas is a friendly, family-oriented section of Porto Santo’s main beach, close to Vila Baleira but sufficiently removed from the centre to retain a gentle residential rhythm.

The Vibe

The mood is cosy, familiar and unhurried. Local families use the beach regularly, while visitors are drawn by easy access, fine sand and the reassuring presence of lifeguard supervision.

A raised bar and terrace on the dune creates the main social focus. People move naturally between shade, drinks and the water, and the setting feels more personal than the large hotel-front sections farther west.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

The beach takes its name from the Pedras Pretas area and can be recognised by the nearby house and bar of the same name. Its position close to Vila Baleira makes it convenient without placing it directly in the busiest part of town.

Facilities include first aid, showers near the bar, straw parasols and seasonal supervision. The beach’s greatest cultural strength is its everyday quality: this is not only a place presented to tourists, but a section used by people who live nearby. Simple food, informal service and repeat visitors give it the character of a neighbourhood beach within Porto Santo’s much larger coastal landscape.

The Landscape

A wide band of pale golden sand meets clear water, with low dunes and scattered buildings forming a soft landward boundary. The bar stands slightly higher on the dune, providing a broad view over the beach and Atlantic.

Pedras Pretas connects seamlessly with Fontinha and Ribeiro Cochino, yet its access point and family atmosphere give it a recognisable centre. The terrain is open and dry compared with Madeira, and the low island relief creates long views across sea and sky. Its beauty is not dramatic but reassuring: fine sand underfoot, a calm horizon and enough local life to make the beach feel welcoming rather than anonymous.
