About Porto Santo - Ribeiro Cochino

Ribeiro Cochino is one of Porto Santo’s most sociable beach sections, combining long golden sand and calm water with local bars, food stalls and a mixed crowd of residents and visitors.

The Vibe

The atmosphere is warm, informal and easygoing. Families settle beneath straw parasols, hotel guests wander along the shore, and local people meet around familiar bars and beach access points.

This section feels less enclosed than a resort concession and more connected to everyday island life. There is enough activity to make the beach friendly and convenient, but the long shoreline prevents it from feeling compressed.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

Ribeiro Cochino lies between the Pedras Pretas access and the route near the well-known Bar do Henrique. Its proximity to Hotel Porto Santo brings visitors, while nearby residents and regular beach users keep the setting grounded in local habits.

Food is an important part of the atmosphere. Parking-area stalls may sell bolo do caco and summer fruit such as grapes, watermelon and figs, while bars and restaurants provide a natural gathering place after swimming. Lifeguard supervision, toilets and beach shade support a comfortable day without turning the shore into a highly managed complex.

The Landscape

Fine golden sand runs in a broad line beside clear, generally mild water. The shore shelves gradually, and the sea is often described as calm with limited wave action during settled summer conditions.

Low development and scattered access points sit behind the beach, leaving the dominant view open along the coast. Ribeiro Cochino is part of the same continuous nine-kilometre shoreline as Porto Santo’s other named beaches, yet its identity comes from the meeting of sand and social life. It feels neither fully urban nor secluded — a relaxed middle ground where local food, familiar gathering places and an expansive Atlantic beach belong to the same experience.
