About Porto Santo - Penedo
Penedo is the quiet eastern section of Porto Santo’s sandy south coast, offering fine golden sand and mild water away from the busier hotels and central streets of Vila Baleira.
The Vibe
The mood is peaceful, spacious and deliberately slow. Fewer people choose this end of the beach, making it well suited to long walks, solitary swimming and families who prefer room around them.
There are fewer bars than on the central coast, so the atmosphere is shaped more by sea and open space than by organised beach life. Lifeguard supervision, first aid, toilets and nearby catering still provide the essentials during the bathing season.

The Setting
The Local Anchor
Penedo lies close to Porto de Abrigo, the island’s harbour, but remains separated from the more commercial centre. Parking within the harbour area provides practical access, while the beach’s quieter identity makes it a useful contrast to Fontinha or Ribeiro Cochino.
The harbour gives this end of the island a working maritime context. Ferries, fishing activity and island supplies pass nearby, reminding visitors that Porto Santo’s beach culture exists alongside the practical routines of a small Atlantic community. The sand is also part of the island’s long-established wellness identity, though here the experience feels simple and uncommercial.
The Landscape
The beach forms the south-eastern continuation of Porto Santo’s long sandy shore. Fine, flat sand meets clear water, while the land behind it remains low, dry and open.
Toward the harbour, infrastructure becomes more visible, but the shoreline itself retains a broad horizon and generous sense of space. The absence of a dense hotel frontage allows sky and sea to dominate. Penedo is not the island’s grand sunset beach or its busiest social centre. Its value lies in quiet continuity — the same golden sand and mild Atlantic water found elsewhere on Porto Santo, experienced at a calmer edge of the island.
