About Playa Canteira
This is a practical family beach with room for walking, playing and settling away from the busiest access points. The sand is coarser than at Cabodeiro, but the broad shoreline creates space and the nearby recreational areas make the beach feel easy to use. It can become lively during fine summer weather without losing its relaxed island atmosphere.
The water often looks protected, yet visitors should still judge conditions on the day. Wind across the ria can create chop, and the tide noticeably changes the distance between the dry beach and the water.

The Setting
A Canteira is a long sheltered beach on A Illa de Arousa, extending for roughly 650 metres along the island's eastern shore. Its coarse sand, wooded surroundings and generous length give it a different character from the smaller coves around the island, while the calm setting of the Ria de Arousa keeps the wider outlook soft and open.
A Canteira sits close to the southern entrance of the island and the bridge from Vilanova de Arousa. That position makes it one of the first beaches encountered after reaching A Illa. The nearby island neighbourhoods provide everyday services, while the main fishing port at O Xufre and the central settlement are a short journey north.
The island's coastal paths are another important anchor. They link beaches, rocky points and small harbours, allowing A Canteira to form part of a longer walk rather than an isolated stop.
The beach is classed as sheltered and is backed in places by trees, gardens and recreational ground. Its coarse sand forms a long, gently curving strip with a broad view across the ria. The mainland shore remains visible, and mussel platforms may be seen in the middle distance.
A Canteira is natural in appearance but not remote. Paths, houses and leisure spaces sit nearby, creating a balance between greenery and settlement. At lower tide, the shore opens considerably and becomes ideal for a long walk. At higher water, the beach narrows and the wooded edge feels closer. The result is a spacious island beach shaped as much by the rhythm of the estuary as by the land behind it.
