About Playa de l'Estany
Footwear suitable for stones and uneven ground improves comfort both on the shore and at the waterline.
The adjacent harbour gives the place a lived-in maritime character. Small craft, anglers and seasonal beach users may all share the area, so swimmers should remain alert to boat access and local markings. The cove can look protected, but sea conditions and depth still need to be judged carefully.

The Setting
Platja de l'Estany Gras, also called Platja de l'Estany, is a stone beach beside an old natural harbour south of L'Ametlla de Mar. Its roughly two-hundred-metre shoreline feels more rugged than the fine-sand beaches north of the town, and the mixture of pebbles, rock and clear water appeals to visitors who enjoy a less conventional coastal stop.
L'Estany was used as a natural port where local fishermen sheltered and moored boats before a modern harbour was built in the centre of L'Ametlla de Mar in the early twentieth century. That history explains why the beach and port form one connected place rather than two unrelated attractions.
The fishing town of L'Ametlla de Mar is a short journey away and provides shops, restaurants and a strong seafood tradition. Access to the beach is possible by road and on foot, while seasonal services may include a beach bar, lifeguard provision, toilets and showers. Availability should be checked outside the main bathing season.
The beach lies between Port de l'Estany and a rocky section separating it from Port Olivet. This is the more rugged southern coast of L'Ametlla, where pine, scrub, low cliffs and stony coves replace the broader sandy beaches found farther north. Clear water reveals a seabed of rock and gravel around the margins.
The GR92 Mediterranean path follows the municipality's coast and links a chain of coves, natural ports and viewpoints. From L'Estany Gras, walking offers a fuller understanding of the setting: not an urban beach detached from its surroundings, but one part of a deeply indented shoreline shaped by fishing, geology and the shelter of small natural inlets.
