Playa de Sant Jordi d'Alfama

Swimmers tend to favour the central shallows, while the rocky margins offer interest for snorkelling when the sea is settled. The cove works equally well for a full beach day or as one stop on a coastal walk linking the neighbouring bays. Despite the sheltered shape, visitors should still follow flags and local advice because wind and swell can change Mediterranean conditions quickly.

Playa de Sant Jordi d'Alfama is a broad, family-friendly cove in the residential coastal area north of L'Ametlla de Mar. Its fine golden sand and gently shelving centre make it more spacious and straightforward than many of the municipality's tiny rocky inlets.

The unmistakable anchor is the fortress of Sant Jordi d'Alfama above the coast. The site is associated with a medieval military order founded to protect this part of the shoreline, although the visible fortified building reflects later reconstruction. Its stone walls turn an ordinary sea view into a scene with real historical depth and explain why the headland has remained a landmark for centuries. Nearby Cala Vidre is another stop on the same coastal route, beyond the fortress headland. Together with Cala Forn and the paths around Sant Jordi, it shows how closely heritage and bathing places are woven into L'Ametlla de Mar's shore.

The cove extends for roughly one hundred metres, with a generous sweep of sand between low rocky arms. Mediterranean vegetation and residential streets sit above the beach, but the fortress and natural outline remain the dominant features. The centre of the bay has a sandy approach, while stones and submerged rock become more noticeable towards the sides. In calm weather, the changing seabed produces clear bands of pale turquoise and deeper blue. The headlands create an enclosed view, then open suddenly to the horizon at the mouth of the cove. This mixture of usable sand, rocky detail and architecture gives Sant Jordi a balanced landscape: developed enough to be accessible, natural enough to retain the form of a classic Costa Daurada inlet, and historic enough to be remembered long after the swim.
