Playa Cala Montgn

The water is often calmer than on more exposed beaches around the Bay of Roses, although conditions should still be judged on the day.

Summer brings a lively mix of swimmers, children, kayaks and small craft. Restaurants and beach facilities make it easy to spend several hours here, but the cove's popularity means that the sand, nearby streets and parking areas can fill early. Outside the busiest weeks, Montgo feels more relaxed and its curved outline becomes easier to appreciate.

Cala Montgo is a rounded, sheltered bay at the southern edge of L'Escala, combining the intimacy of a cove with the services and energy of a small seaside neighbourhood. Fine sand, a broad bathing area and protection from the north wind make it especially popular with families.

The cove lies at L'Escala's southernmost point and also touches the municipality of Torroella de Montgri. This border position gives it a distinct identity: part residential beach, part gateway to the wilder Montgri coast. The settlement behind the sand provides places to eat and drink, while L'Escala town centre and its maritime heritage are a short journey north.

Above the eastern side stands Torre de Montgo, a historic watchtower built as part of the coast's defence against seaborne raids. Reaching the tower involves a climb, but the landmark helps explain why this protected bay has long been strategically important as well as naturally attractive.

Punta Mila and Punta Montgo frame the beach, enclosing an almost circular sweep of pale sand. One side is backed by homes and visitor services; the other leads towards the cliffs, scrub and limestone scenery of the Montgri, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park.

Coastal paths leave the cove in both directions. Walkers can gain elevated views over the bay or continue towards rocky points, caves and quieter stretches of shore. This meeting of accessible beach life and protected landscape is Montgo's defining quality: a comfortable bathing cove with a visibly rugged coast beginning at its edges.
