About Playa del Rec del Moln

The Vibe

The mood is relaxed and exploratory. Families use the sandy centre, swimmers enter where conditions permit and snorkellers are drawn towards the rocky areas and varied seabed. The beach is close enough to town for convenience but far enough from the main streets to feel like the beginning of a different coastline.

Because a watercourse reaches the shore here, visitors should take extra care after heavy rain and avoid discoloured runoff or temporary warning areas. Wind from the east can also raise waves across the Gulf of Roses. On settled days, Rec del Moli works well as both a bathing stop and the starting point for a longer walk through the Empuries landscape.

The Setting

About

Rec del Moli is the first of the Empuries beaches reached when walking north from L'Escala's old town. Fine sand, low dunes, rocky edges and a channel reaching the coast give it a more natural character than the town-centre beaches, while the seafront path keeps access straightforward.

The Local Anchor

L'Escala's old quarter lies just south, with its fishing history, anchovy producers and compact waterfront. The route north quickly enters the heritage zone associated with Empuries, linking Rec del Moli to Portitxol, Les Muscleres, Moll Grec and Sant Marti d'Empuries.

The beach name recalls the mill channel that shaped this part of the coast. That freshwater connection, together with the dunes and rocky habitat, helps explain why the beach feels more ecologically varied than a simple urban strand.

The Landscape

Rec del Moli combines fine sand with dune vegetation and rougher stone at the margins. The coastline bends gently, creating views back towards L'Escala and forward along the pine-edged Empuries promenade.

The underwater landscape includes rock and patches of marine habitat, which can make snorkelling rewarding when visibility and sea state are suitable. Footwear and caution are sensible around uneven edges.

The beach is especially attractive in the morning, when the path is quieter and the archaeological coast ahead is clearly visible. Rec del Moli serves as a transition: behind it is the historic town, while beyond it begins a chain of beaches where dunes, ancient settlement and the open Gulf of Roses become the dominant landscape.
