Playa Calas Orientales(maro)

Maro feels compact, scenic and strongly focused on the water. Swimmers, snorkellers and kayakers use the cove, while families settle close to the main access because the sandy area is limited. Summer arrivals can be heavy, especially when parking and road access are restricted.

The shore is coarse and dark, with gravel and stones near parts of the waterline. Clear conditions reveal rock and marine life around the sides, although wind and local waves can change visibility quickly. Visitors should use established access routes and plan supplies, as the steep setting makes repeated trips back uphill inconvenient.

Playa de Maro lies below the white village of Maro at the western edge of the protected Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo coastline. Its dark sand, clear water and steep agricultural and rocky surroundings make it one of Nerja's most distinctive natural beaches.

Maro village stands above the coast, with white houses, agricultural plots and the old sugar-mill landscape reflecting the area's long cultivation history. The Torre de Maro and nearby watch sites recall the defensive system that monitored this once-isolated shoreline.

The protected cliffs continue east towards Cerro Gordo. Kayak routes often explore caves, rock arches and waterfalls along this coast when conditions allow, but access to sensitive areas is regulated. Nerja provides the nearest larger centre.

Dark sand forms a small cove beneath steep slopes covered with crops, scrub and exposed rock. The beach has no urban promenade, and buildings are limited compared with Burriana or Torrecilla.

Rocky headlands frame both sides, while the Mediterranean changes from pale green near shore to deeper blue farther out. Inland, the Sierra de Almijara rises beyond Maro. The beach's character comes from compression: village and farmland above, protected cliffs beside it and clear water filling a narrow natural amphitheatre below. Agricultural terraces above the cove produce avocado and other subtropical crops, adding a cultivated layer to a coastline often described only as wild. The steep approach also means beach space and vehicle access are both limited in high season.
