About Playa Cantarrijan

The Vibe

Cantarrijan is relaxed, tolerant and strongly focused on nature. Naturist and clothed visitors share the beach, while snorkellers explore the rocky margins and families use the calmer-looking sections. The limited frontage can feel busy during summer despite the isolated surroundings.

Access is controlled seasonally to reduce pressure on the protected area, with shuttle transport commonly operating from the upper parking zone. The beach has some food and shade services but remains very different from an urban promenade. Visitors should plan around the access arrangements and bring suitable footwear for the mixed surface.

The Setting

About Playa Cantarrijan

Playa Cantarrijan is an isolated naturist beach within the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Natural Area, at the western edge of Almunecar's municipality. Its dark sand and gravel, dramatic cliffs and protected marine setting make it one of the Costa Tropical's most distinctive coves.

The Local Anchor

Two beach restaurants provide the main facilities at water level, serving fish, rice and seafood within the cove. La Herradura is the nearest substantial settlement for shops and accommodation, while Almunecar lies farther east.

The Maro-Cerro Gordo protected area is the real anchor. Its cliffs, underwater rock, seagrass and marine habitats support diving and snorkelling, while the steep land above carries Mediterranean scrub and pine. The protection applies to both coastal and marine landscapes.

The Landscape

Cantarrijan is roughly 380 metres long and divided visually by a rock formation into two adjoining sections. Dark gravel and sand meet clear water beneath high, folded cliffs that descend directly towards the sea.

There is no urban skyline behind the beach. Vegetation clings to the slopes, and rocky outcrops continue underwater, producing varied colours and marine life. The cove feels enclosed but not small because the cliffs and sea create strong vertical depth. Cantarrijan's character rests on the combination of naturism, controlled access and a protected coastal landscape. Kayaks and paddleboards sometimes appear in settled weather, adding another way to view the cliffs from water level. The seasonal shuttle reduces private vehicle pressure on the narrow access road during the busiest months.
